2011 Flamenco en la Frontera Festival is born to revive Morón’s jondo heartbeat

Morón de la Frontera wants to get back its prominence on the flamenco map. The Seville-area town revives its role by founding the Flamenco en la Frontera (Flamenco on the Border) Festival. The first edition, which is to be held from September 7th to 10th, 2011, combines recitals, lectures, courses, showings of documentary films, exhibits and late night shows in its program. Artists such as Alfredo Lagos, Dani de Morón, Jairo Barrull, Jesús Méndez, Manuel Lombo, Pepe Torres, Moi de Morón, Rafael Rodríguez and Márquez el Zapatero appear on a bill “which combines the traditional with the modern”. And the very setting itself plays a main role, since the offer includes visits to enclaves rich in history and monuments, natural reserves, oil mills, wineries, country estates, ranches and meadows.

Morón de la Frontera is a Seville-area town historically linked to flamenco. Sometimes by the artists born in the land and others for having been a stopover for important jondo figures like El Fillo, La Andonda, Silverio Franconetti and El Tenazas. In the 1960s, the town lived its golden age as a flamenco enclave thanks to the birth of Gazpacho de Morón, one of the most veteran festivals on the circuit; and due to the activity of American Don E.

Pohren who, on an estate in the outskirts of town, offered accommodation to tourists who were seeking to make direct contact with flamenco culture through classes, performances and private parties including appearances by artists of the likes of Juan Talega, Manolito María, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, Perrate and Diego del Gastor.

And it’s the revival of that legacy which is sought by the Flamenco en la Frontera Festival, which holds its first edition from September 7th to 10th, 2011. The bill of performances is highlighted by shows at the Teatro Oriente, where the recitals scheduled include ’12 cuerdas’ by guitarists Alfredo Lagos and Dani de Morón; ‘Méndez & Lombo. Mano a mano’ by Manuel Lombo and Jesús Méndez; and ‘Por amor al arte’ by bailaor Pepe Torres, cantaores Moi de Morón and El Galli, and guitarist Rafael Rodríguez. There will be flamenco at the Casa de la Cultura (Culture House) “Fundación Fernando Villalón”, where the ‘Trasnoches’ Series hosts shows by Jairo Barrull, cantaores Márquez el Zapatero and Antonio Ruiz el Carpintero, and by bailaor Antonio Vázquez.

Another core of the festival is training. The program, organized by Taller Flamenco, is carried out at the Casa de la Cultura Fundación Fernando Villalón and includes baile courses by maestros such as Lidia Valle and Pepe Torres, and guitar courses taught by Dani de Morón and Michele Iaccarino, which have the incentive of free admission to the shows. In addition, there is a compás and clapping course by Moi de Morón. At the setting of La Casa de la Cilla, there are lectures scheduled on subjects related to Morón’s flamenco history and to flamenco in general. The related activities also include the photo exhibit ‘Flamenco Project’, commissioned by Steve Kahn, as well as the showing of documentaries like ‘La fuente de lo jondo’ and ‘Agujetas, cantaor’, among others.
